Basic Guidelines When Your Child is Ill:

A bad cough or cold symptoms can indicate a severe cold, bronchitis, flu, or even pneumonia. If your child is not acting “right”, has a fever, is coughing consistently, has infectious drainage from the nose or is coughing up infectious drainage,  please keep him/her home.

Diarrhea and vomiting within the last 24 hours. Your child may return to school when the diarrhea and vomiting has stopped and they are able to keep down solid food.

Fever within the last 24 hours. Most pediatricians advise parents to keep children home during the course of a fever and for an additional 24 hours. Your child may return to school when they have been fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication.

Conjunctivitis or “Pink eye” is highly contagious and uncomfortable. If your child complains of either eye burning, itching, obvious redness, and producing a whitish discharge, please seek treatment with your health care provider. Keep your child home until 24 hours after treatment with prescription eye medication and until inflammation and drainage are gone.

Ear infections can cause permanent hearing damage if not properly treated. Keep your child home if he/she is complaining of ear pain. Your child needs to be seen by your doctor and if antibiotics are prescribed, keep him/her home for 24 hours after treatment has begun.

Chicken Pox is a viral disease, is not life threatening to children, but is uncomfortable and very contagious. If your child has a fever, is itching, and begins to sprout pink or red spots (with “watery” centers) on the back, chest and/or face, please see your health care provider. Even if your child has been vaccinated, there have been cases of “breakthrough” chicken pox. Please notify the school and keep your child home for at least a week after you first noticed the symptoms or until all spots have crusted over.

Strep throat and scarlet fever are two highly contagious conditions accompanied by a sore throat and high fever. Some 12 to 24 hours after the onset of scarlet fever, a rash will also appear. A child with either strep throat or scarlet fever should be kept home and treated with antibiotics as prescribed by your physician. Your child may return to school after 24 hours of effective antibiotic treatment.

If you think your child may have a contagious illness, and are waiting for an appointment with your health care provider to confirm the diagnosis, please do not send your child to school. This puts other students/staff at risk and allows the contagious cycle to continue.

Please call me @ 360-1227 if you have any questions regarding the health of your child or if you are unsure if you should send your child to school.

Emergency Information

It is most important that you complete your child's Emergency Information and return it to the school.
Keep the information current, so that the school staff can easily contact the appropriate authorized persons if your child becomes ill or is hurt while in school.
Make sure that the chosen emergency contacts are available to pick up your child in a reasonable amount of time.
For the safety of all children, the child will be released only to those people listed as the emergency information contacts.
